What I packed for my 1-Year Travel Trip

Embarking on Your Minimalist Travel Adventure: Preparation, Packing, and More

Hey, fellow travelers! Welcome back to “Ben on His Way.” I’m Ben, your go-to guy for travel tips, preparation hacks, and minimalist packing secrets. Today, I’m diving deep into how I prepped for my latest trip. From setting departure dates to packing my skateboard in a travel bag, I’ve got you covered. So, buckle up, grab a notepad, and let’s get started!

Setting the Foundation: Three Months Before Departure

1. Set Your Departure Date

The very first step in planning any trip is setting your departure date. I know it sounds basic, but trust me, without a fixed date, it’s easy to procrastinate and let things slip. This date becomes your goalpost, the anchor around which all your preparations revolve.

2. Check and Cancel Contracts

Go through all your existing contracts. This includes mobile, housing, insurance, and any subscriptions. Each contract will have its own notice period, so it’s crucial to handle these well in advance. For instance, I switched my mobile plan to prepaid to avoid losing my number and canceled unnecessary insurance.

3. Visa and Vaccinations

Depending on your destination, you might need a visa. Apply as early as possible, as processing times can vary greatly. Also, check the vaccination requirements for your destination. Some vaccines require multiple doses spaced out over weeks or months.

4. Create a To-Do List

Start a comprehensive to-do list. I used my iPhone to jot down every little task that came to mind. This helped ensure I didn’t forget anything crucial as the departure date approached.

Intermediate Steps: One to Three Months Before Departure

1. Book Flights and Accommodation

With your departure date set, it’s time to book your flights and accommodation. Look for flexible tickets if possible, and research housing options that suit your travel style, whether it’s hostels, hotels, or short-term rentals.

2. Purchase Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is non-negotiable. It covers unexpected events like medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage. Make sure your policy covers all the activities you plan to do, especially if they’re adventurous.

3. Plan Activities and Lessons

Whether you want to learn a new language, take surfing lessons, or join cultural tours, plan these in advance. This not only saves money but also ensures availability.

4. Organize Your Move

If you’re ending a housing contract, organize your move. Gather friends, rent a vehicle, and get packing supplies. Moving can be chaotic, so start this process early to avoid last-minute stress.

Final Preparations: One Month to Two Weeks Before Departure

1. Throw a Goodbye Party

Host a goodbye party to create lasting memories with friends and family. It’s a great way to say your farewells and share your excitement about your upcoming adventures. Need some inspo? This was the goodbye party I threw before traveling

2. Prepare a Safety Letter

I wrote a safety letter containing all my important information: passwords, insurance details, ID numbers, and more. I entrusted this to a reliable friend, so if I ever lose my documents, I can easily access the necessary information.

3. Notify Relevant Parties of Your Move

Inform banks, subscription services, and other relevant parties of your new address or PO box. This ensures you won’t miss any important mail while you’re away.

4. Find Temporary Accommodation

Secure a place to stay for your last week or two before departure. It’s usually a hectic time, and having a stable place to crash will make the transition smoother.

The Final Countdown: One to Two Weeks Before Departure

1. Pack and Store Belongings

Begin packing your belongings into labeled boxes for storage. This is a great opportunity to declutter and embrace minimalism. You’ll be surprised at how little you actually need.

2. Essential Items to Pack

Here’s a look at what made it into my travel bag:

  • Luggage: A large suitcase that fits my skateboard. (like this one)
  • Shoes: Six pairs, essential due to my shoe size (US 14).
  • Clothing: Includes a hoodie, two sweaters, 12 t-shirts (six white, six black), three pairs of pants, three pairs of shorts, swim trunks, and sportswear.
  • Accessories: A rain jacket, hip bag, toiletry bag, shaver, gloves, jump rope, and packing cubes.
  • Electronics: Headphones, laptop, passport, AC plug, and a cable organizer.
  • Books: A mix of English novels and Spanish learning books.
  • Miscellaneous: A sleeping mask, sunglasses, e-reader, skateboard and accessories, a lock, headlights, and a backpack.

Packing Tips for Minimalist Travelers

1. Prioritize Essentials

Focus on multi-functional items. For example, a pair of shorts can be used for both lounging and sports. Pack versatile clothing that can be layered for different climates.

2. Organize Your Bag

Use packing cubes and cable organizers to keep everything tidy. This not only saves space but also makes it easier to find things without unpacking your entire bag.

3. Skateboard Travel Bag

If you’re traveling with a skateboard, find a bag that can accommodate it. Look for durable, padded bags to protect your board and other gear. Ensure the bag meets airline size restrictions for checked luggage.

4. Minimalism is Key

Adopt a minimalist mindset. The less you carry, the easier your travels will be. Each item should serve a purpose and add value to your trip.

Final Thoughts

Preparation is the backbone of any successful trip. By setting a departure date, managing contracts, and organizing your move early, you pave the way for a smooth journey. Embrace minimalism and focus on essential items to enhance your travel experience. And don’t forget, travel is about the journey as much as the destination. Enjoy every moment, from packing to partying with friends before you leave.
